Corpus Christi Young Lawyers Association – CCYLA – Love Shouldn’t Hurt

On February 13, 2016, the Corpus Christi Young Lawyers Association (CCYLA) hosted its first “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” 5K run and 1 mile walk. A substantial portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit the Women’s Shelter of South Texas.  Domestic violence is a huge issue facing all communities, and CCYLA hopes that the name of the race itself will help raise awareness.  The name was the idea of the previous executive director of the Corpus Christi Bar Association, Richard “Dick” King, who tragically passed away this fall.   

Dick King was passionate about supporting local charities such as the Women’s Shelter of South Texas and believed that raising money to support victims of domestic abuse is a great way for CCYLA to give back to the community.  The board loved his idea and decided that the race should be a tribute to honor the memory of Dick King.

Before becoming the executive director of the Corpus Christi Bar Association, Mr. King served our country in the JAG Corps of the United States Navy and as executive director of the Nueces County Medical Society.  Mr. King was not only the executive director of the bar association but a personal friend to many members of the Bar. He loved his job and cared deeply for the lawyers with whom he worked.

Mr. King was an extremely hard worker and dedicated his time and effort to the bar association.  I enjoyed talking with Dick several times a week about various young lawyer projects. His witty sense of humor never failed to brighten my day.  He loved the passion we exhibited on each project and enjoyed working with the young lawyers association.  Mr. King was a dependable and caring man and his loss has been felt deeply by all who knew him.  Personally, I am so thankful for my time on the CCYLA board of directors and the opportunity of working with Mr. King.  I was truly blessed by his friendship.

CCYLA had participation in this event by not only members of our community, but also local attorneys.  The event was a great success and had participation by 324 runners.  We hope this will become an annual event honoring Dick King by raising money for local charities.
