Tom Green County Young Lawyers Association—Kingpins for Kids
By: Sara Anne Giddings, TYLA District 15 Director

The Tom Green County Young Lawyers Association (TGCYLA) held its second annual Kingpins for Kids, a bowling tournament that benefits programs for area children.  The funds raised from the tournament will be used at various events that TGCYLA participates in throughout the year including adoption day, foster care fair, events at the women’s and children’s shelter, presentations at the local schools of I Was the First. You can be a Lawyer Too! and What Do Lawyers Do?, and events with CASA.

Fifteen teams participated in the bowling tournament.  The entry fee was $125 for a five-person team that included three games, bowling shoes, a T-shirt, and goodie bags.  We also offered different sponsorship levels: Spare, Strike, and Kingpin.  The sponsors were all listed on the T-shirts and were given opportunities to contribute items to the goodie bags. The goodie bags included koozies, pens, notepads, a jar of San Angelo’s favorite okra, free cone coupons from Dairy Queen, free car wash coupons, and a discount to the local craft beer bar.  In addition to the entry fee, TGCYLA had a raffle and sold Gutter Ball Erasers, which can be used to erase a low score with a strike.

The teams all had a lot of fun bowling.  Although some individuals were better at bowling than others, no one seemed to mind.  TGCYLA awarded First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Last Place trophies.  TGYLA encouraged all participants to have a good time and awarded a Team Spirit Award to Concho Bail Bond Pins.

Additionally, TGCYLA awarded individual prizes for male and female highest series and male and female highest roller.  Justice Strikers took home the trophy for the second tournament in a row and the 7-10 Split Jury took home the last place honors, including a coupon for a free game of bowling so that they could hone their skills for the next tournament.

Overall, Kingpins for Kids was a huge success and we look forward to planning our next tournament.  If you would like to learn more about this project, feel free to contact me by email
