Feature TYLA Affiliate

The Corpus Christi Young Lawyers Association is off to a great year.  With a dynamic group of officers and directors, CCYLA is out to promote camaraderie, while continuing to offer education and advocate community outreach.  CCYLA has accomplished this by providing several opportunities for local young lawyers to get together and learn.

In January and February, CCYLA combined forces with the Corpus Christi Bar Association to participate in Habitat for Humanity.  Eighteen volunteers worked on a home for a single mother with three children.  This willingness of CCYLA members to give their time and energy to build up the local community exemplifies CCYLA’s dedication to service.

In an effort to bring members and nonmembers together in a fun and relaxing atmosphere, CCYLA hosted their annual poker tournament.  This event featured the always-coveted opportunity to win the title of best poker player in town!  The Poker Tournament is open to the entire bar and is a great way to unwind amongst new and old friends.

CCYLA created the Kid’s Law Library in effort to promote literacy.  In April, CCYLA along with l went to Los Encinos to bring new books and meet with the children.  The children’s task included reading the books and writing book reports.  The winners of the best book reports received awards.  The Kid’s Law Library is an award-winning project that highlights CCYLA’s passion to promote an understanding of the legal profession.

CCYLA continued its CLE known as “Baseball with the Bench.”  This year a panel of speakers, that included attorneys specializing in different areas from family law to real estate, addressed a hypothetical question.  The CLE also featured a panel of state and federal judges from multiple counties who discussed the newly enacted Rules of Civil Procedure.  Their discussions on the new expedited trial rules engaged the audience in lively conversations.  After the CLE, participants and members relaxed and enjoyed watching the Hooks play baseball at Whataburger Field.

CCYLA still has a lot planned!  CCYLA is excited to offer its second annual Skeet Shoot and CLE.  Last year’s event was a success and this year CCYLA plans to capitalize on that and enhance it by adding a CLE on gun laws.  The officers and directors of CCYLA are also working hard on other new projects.  CCYLA wants all members and nonmembers to realize that lawyers can and do play a vital role in their community.
