ABA YLD Update

By: Travis Patterson and Brandon Crisp

The American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division invites you to apply for a 2015-2016 ABA YLD leadership appointment. Whether you are a newly licensed lawyer or a long-serving volunteer leader, we hope that you will consider applying for one of the more than 300 available positions for the Sept. 1, 2015, to Aug. 31, 2016 bar year. The deadline to submit an application is Feb. 15, 2015. Find more information about positions, expectations, eligibility, and applying here.

The ABA YLD has launched a new national public service project—Project Street Youth: Young Lawyers Advocating for Homeless Youth.  There are over 1.7 million homeless youth in the United States, and the project is aimed at providing access to justice to this extremely underserved population.  Project Street Youth has three main components: (1) educating and raising awareness of the issue; (2) legislation; and (3) legal clinics. There will be an implementation of the project in Houston during the ABA’s Midyear Meeting in February.  If you are interested in rolling out the project in your area, the online toolkit has everything you need to get going.

The ABA YLD is also getting ready for its next conference—the ABA Midyear Meeting—which will be in Houston Feb. 5-8 at the Hilton Americas Hotel and the George R. Brown Convention Center.  If you are interested in attending the conference, registration is now open. Also, Texas has 12 delegate spots to fill for the Assembly, which is the principal policy-making body of the ABA YLD.  If you are interested in serving as a Texas delegate, please email Travis Patterson and Brandon Crisp.
