Record-breaking School Year for Law Students
By: Belashia Wallace

As a result of the efforts of State Bar of Texas Law Student Division representatives, TYLA directors, and supporters, this has been a record-breaking school year for law student members. Along with Texas law schools reaching triple-digit student membership numbers, this school year also marks the highest number of scholarship applications received for our $1,000 TYLA Diversity Scholarship, as well as the $1,000 State Bar of Texas Law Student Division Legal Professionalism Award.

The TYLA Diversity Scholarship, through TYLA’s Diversity Committee, awards a $1,000 scholarship to one or more law students at each of the ABA-accredited law schools in Texas. In awarding the scholarships, the Diversity Committee considers the applicant’s resume, letter(s) of recommendation, demonstrated commitment to diversity, academic performance, and financial need. All TYLA Diversity Scholarship recipients were also required to respond to the following essay questions: (1) Why do you believe that diversity is important in the practice of law?; and (2) What can the Texas Young Lawyers Association and the State Bar of Texas do to promote and support diversity in the legal profession?

The State Bar of Texas Law Student Division’s Legal Professionalism Award, through TYLA volunteering attorneys, awards a $1,000 scholarship to two law students from among all of the ABA-accredited law schools in Texas. To apply, students must be active Law Student Division members. Scholarship winners were required to explain how their professional traits are worth emulating within the legal profession. Each recipient’s essay also illustrated ways that they set an example in their community, making others proud that they have chosen to be a part of the legal profession.

Stay tuned for the $1,000 State Bar of Texas Spring Essay Contest!
